Happy Birthday Campaign:

Hosting a Card Signing Event

To host an event in your city, town or on your campus:

  • It is highly recommended that you work with an organization, institution(s) or community grouping that will anchor (promote, develop, mobilize for) the card signing event.
  • You should aim to get at least 200 people to attend the event.
  • Events should focus on drawing media attention and include a press-conference around the main event (press kit to be provided).
  • You should try to have at least one highly recognizable public figure (politician or artist) at the event in order to draw press attention and broaden the appeal.
  • Events should include some form of educational component for students, teachers, and/or the public about Assata’s case, Cuba, and local community issues (outline will be provided).
  • Hosts should participate in fundraising to support the campaign event in their city.
  • Each event should incorporate ways to keep participants engaged in the campaign, and participate in follow-up initiatives focused on the connected goal of securing a pardon from New Jersey.
  • Participate in the finale in New Jersey/New York in July, 2007 and follow up events.
  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with national staff on any updates related to the event.

Important: Please note: all events are meant to be inclusive; this is a mass movement campaign (including cross-cultural, cross-sexual orientation, cross-gender, cross-spiritual, cross-class, cross-age, etc.) focusing on the liberation of our sister, our comrades, and our communities.  Building alliances and solidarity with other organizations and communities is not only encouraged, but necessary.
